I have been trying to end up with a decent spider tiedye and either the front spider looks good & the on the back, half looks good & half is skinnier, or vice versa. It doesn't seem to matter how much black I use. The only difference is whether I start with the shirt front or backside up before I fold it in half before I start the swirl. Has anybody else had this problem? I really think the spider is cool, but would like a decent looking spider on both sides. Thank you for any suggestions.

I got a decent-looking spider by painting the thin side when I saw how awful it came out the first time.  tongue

Not sure if there's a way to make it look good on both sides, but I did find that putting the front on the inside of the fold helped both halves of the front look closer-to-alike, since they were right across from each other in the fold.

Thanks, Deb, for your tip. I had not thought of that, but I'll definitely try it. It's nice to know it's not just me with that problem. Thanks again.

Turning the shirt inside out before tying and dyeing will definitely help.

Just saw this on youtube. Helped me kind of understand more of how to do this. Hope it can help others too.

Welcome to the club, brother:

The problem you/I/we have is that the fabric has a very real thickness to it.  More ranting, raving and suggestions in the thread listed.
