So... ah... is it just me, or are all the images of t-shirts/etc missing from this site?  I'll read a post, and it says, "Hey, that's gorgeous, Bob!", but there's no image in Bob's post...

Did they all vanish?  Or do they get deleted when they're too old?

Or maybe my browser thinks that they're advertisments, or something...

Huh

FWIW, I'm not having problems seeing images. Here's an image from my gallery:

Can you see it? If not, here's the link I'm using, http://itiedye.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_IMG_0377_Edited3.JPG

Can you see it if you go directly to the address?

are you getting a popup at the top of your browser indicating  blocked content by chance?  Please don't be insulted by the question, I just know that I often have to unblock images on some forums.

I've figured out that it was the new browser I am (er... "was") using.  Thanks though.

I only yesterday was having problems with my browser, (Firefox 1.something), so I upgraded to 2.something, and everything was fine except that it just won't load those offsite images here.

It's weird... anyway, I'll just have to use and upgrade this other moldy browser.

I'll say this though:  If you thought that this site was "educational", you were right!  I made the mistake of looking through the "gallery", and now I know that compared to you guys, my T-shirts suck!!!!!!   Ohmigod!!!!!!

Boy, do I have a long way to go...

You might want to try the standard "clear cookies and cache" and see what that gets you.

Do not be discouraged!  None of us started out knowing how to do this... the secret is to let yourself go and have fun with it!  You will be amazed at how quickly you will progress if you just stick with it.  I've been at this almost 10 years now, and I am still learning, 'tweaking' my methods, adding new things.  It is highly addictive, and you can really get a creative 'high' from it!  So enjoy...

Do not be discouraged!

Please don't trouble yourself with that idea. I don't think I can promise not to be "discouraged", (good grief!), but as far as throwing in the towel, don't worry!

Just the opposite, in fact.  I've declared Mega-Jihad.

I visited your website, tiedyejudy, (*sigh*), and if I could bother you just for a moment, what are "Jaja's hand-stitching techniques" in the "Under Water" shirt?

I mean I think I can guess, mostly, but is there a thread somewhere? (Searching doesn't find it)

The LWI thing I'm already messing around with, (2 shirts so far that I think are cool).  Do I simply put a few basting stitches in the shirt, or do I need a machine? (For those "crevices")

I think Jaja and Tiedyejudy use whipstitching to create that effect. It's hard to describe, but I'm sure if you do google whipstitch, you might find an idea. It is also mentioned in a few shibori books.

what are "Jaja's hand-stitching techniques"

Jaja is one of our members who did a really neat shirt and posted here somewhere (I'll try to find it and let you know).  Anyway, after I asked her how she did it, and she told me, this is basically what I do:  I use a transfer pencil to draw gently curving lines on a shirt.  Then, I fold the fabric so that the line is on top of the fold and use a basting stitch (also known as a running stitch) to gather up the fabric.  I use dental floss instead of thread, because it is stronger and also so I can see it when I go to remove it after the shirt has been dyed.  I keep promising to take pictures and post on the wiki, but it's been awhile since I did that design and it may need to wait a couple of months.  At any rate, give it a try, and don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions!

Dental floss as thread, eh?

Well that's pretty funny!  Especially since I could have/should have thought of that myself, too-- it was only two shirts ago I myself used dental floss to tie up a regular old spiral, (rubber bands are just always the wrong size!).

Anyway, you're right-- I should "Just Do It'.  Since this is an LWI thing, the idea that I will "get it wrong" is ridiculous.  No matter how it comes out, it will be fine, and just add to the knowledge base.

Thanks!

I also realize now that I can use floss to tie up an accordion pleat that doesn't go across the whole shirt...  If you want a good laugh, check this out: I tried to imitate, (er... "flatter"), one of the "bleach discharge on a black shirt" designs I saw on this site, and I could only accordion from the bottom about a third of the way up, because the shirt had a pre-printed logo on front, (it was a giveaway shirt).

So to keep the accordion in place, I used two C-clamps and four pennies!  LOL!  Well, I guess it worked... kinda.  Smiley

I would love to see a picture of that!  Spring clamps would probably work as well... I had to start using those when I realized regular clothes pins were too small for accordion folded shirts.  I love how inventive we can get when we just let our minds play!  And I have this forum and a couple of others to thank for blasting me out of my rut... I have really learned a lot from the folks who post here!

Judy I think we have discussed it at Mike Fowler's forum...way back in time. I guess it was this one:

running stitch, the easiest stitch that exists, I would say.

As whip stitch was mentioned here, here is example of it on the V design in the middle of shirt.

Thanks for posting those, Jaja!  I still get goosebumps when I see the shirt with the wavy lines... awesome!

I would love to see a picture of that!

I would share, but I don't have a digi-camera.  cry  The area under the pennies remained black, but I spilled bleach around them a bit.  (Oops!) Then after dyeing a yellow and red blend, along the top of the accordion part there are four little solar eclipses with the corona exploding out a little bit.

What I thought would happen didn't (as usual).  I was expecting to get some impression of the pennies through every layer of the accordion, but it didn't happen at all.  The first layer has an eclipse, then the next layer is almost completely normal accordion looking with no impression of the pennies showing.

Ahh... I get it now... I can see the difference between the running stitch and the whipstitch. i must have been confused at first, but they both look awesome.
