Nice work!  I especially like the double lightning bolts!  But 'Meander' is great too!  I really like the colors you used for these shirts too, especially the last DLBl... very southwestern!

I try to use "non-traditional" colors and sequences and since I'm in tucson, try to use "southwest" colors in some of my dyeing.
Also, I like to dye my men's shirts with more "manly" colors, whatever that means!
Thanks for taking a look.

It was well-worth the wait to see what you've been working on... great pieces!  Wonderful color and design... thanks for working so hard to get them posted!

Hi There- Would you mind telling what colors you used in the tie-dye/printed fabric piece? Thanks, Marg

Aw Gee Marg.......
I'm a "by the seat of my pants" dyer. I mix colors as I go and pretty much use the activated dye method.
I keep concentrated dyes with urea in the dye fridge so I always have dye ready. This is from Ann Johnston's book "Color By Accident", a wonderful resource.
I also have a mix of soda ash and alginate and urea (and water) also in bottles in the fridge.
I use quarter cup and cup size squirt bottles. I use the tiny bottles a lot.
So when I'm dyeing, I pour a little dye into my bottle, thin it or not, and fill the rest up with the alginate, soda ash, urea mix or perhaps just soda ash water and then often shift the color with eye dropper drips of another color.
I tend to use many colors and usually things come out really interesting. I have made "dogs", but even they can be used as cut up pieces with other cut up pieces.
I began to use strange colors together after reading somewhere on Paula Burch's website, http://www.pburch.net/, (another wonderful resource) to try this. She gave an example of purple and orange, not mixed, but applied separately.
Also in M. Fowler's tiedye video, in his chaos shirt, he uses at least 10 colors applied with squirt bottles in a vigorous manner, all over the shirt. Talk about mixing colors on the fly.
So, you see, I can't really tell you what colors I used on the wall hanging because I mix so much, in the bottle and on the fabric (often vigorously, haha).
Play...
k. taltre

ps: I watched that part of Fowler's video this morning and he just used 7 colors on his chaos shirt.

Wow...I really like those manly and southwest colors.  I would define most of them as not bright (they are secondary and tertiary colors, a bit more muted compared with fuschia, turquoise, etc.) but very rich or intense (high depth of shade, high value, saturated, etc., as contrasted with pastels).  I have always liked brown and green and blue together...they are earth, trees, and sky, and resonate with me.  Thanks for sharing your work!!

That's called a lightning bolt V. It's a Michael Fowler tie and it's on his video. I took a class a couple of years ago from him and the first shirt I did in the class was that tie, but I did it the wrong way, so it looked like a christmas tree.
There's also a kaleidoscope tie, done with a sheet, on his video, that uses the same technique for the middle.
It's sort of hard to describe in words. Maybe I'll juice my camera up and take some pictures.
It is well documented on Fowler's video.

What do you do with the edges of the shirts that you reconstruct? Do you hem them up, or leave them raw?  If you hem them, what kind of stitch do you use?
