Here's an article from the Wikipedia that explains what a wiki is:

It puts you, the reader, in the author's chair. One of the changes in the Internet has been the shift from the READ web to READ/WRITE web.

Here a glance at the edit view from the Wiki. After you log in an edit tab appears above the Wiki text window. Click on the edit tab and this is what you will see.



The big rectangular box in the middle is where text is typed. The strange punctuation is wiki markup that formats the text, makes links, etc. Look to the left and you see a quicktags link. When opened it looks like this:



Mouse over any icon and you are given an idea as to what these icons do. Select the text you want to format, then click on the particular icon.

Below the main text field, there is an upload photo area.

Below that there is a wiki help button for a quick summary of wiki syntax that looks like this once opened:
